Dear Sir,

I am writing in regard to people who keep large dogs in flats. I strongly believe that this is a form of cruelty to animals.

My neighbours keep a collie. They leave for work at 8 a.m. and seldom return before midnight. While they are out, the dog is shut up in a bedroom so that it will not damage anything in the flat. It gets no exercise at all. In the summer, their air conditioner(空调) is never turned on.

Last month, my neighbours went away for three days. During this time, no one visited the dog or brought it food or water. After three days of being all alone, this dog was extremely hungry and thirsty. I know this because it barked(吠叫) more weakly each day.

Last week, I called the Animal Shelter and they have promised to check up on the owners. However, I feel that the Government should ban(明令禁止) people from keeping large pets in tiny flats. Animal deserve better treatment than this.

Some boys and girls do not like their holidays. They do not enjoy it because they cannot play games at school with their schoolmates. During their holidays, they, especially those older girls, work in factories, so as to earn some money for their parents. If they are not old enough to work in factories, their parents may ask them to help look after their younger brothers or sisters at home, or they may even help cook their daily meals.

There is another group of school children who need not do household work or earn money for their parents. For this group, many schools will let them play games, film shows or go for visit so that they will not be left unattended during the holidays.
